Saturday, April 29, 2006 (PST) - MCU April Field Trip---Gold Hill, UT

For the month of April, we will be going out to Gold Hill, Utah, to collect to variety of Copper and Arsenic minerals, including some very rare and strange species.

Location: Gold Hill open pit is about 1.5 mile east of Gold Hill.

Collecting: Arsenates (Adamite, austinite, conichalcite, etc.)

Tools: Rock hammer, chisels, backpack/bucket, hand lens

Leaders: Jason D. Glenn (532-4556), Chuck Adan (683-7589)

Plan on meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the McDonald’s in Lake Point Junction (just off the Tooele /I-80 exit). We can caravan from here. It is about a two -hour drive from Lake Point.  The road is accessable to all vehicles up to the town of Gold Hill.  From there, the last couple of miles to the mine is pretty rough and would require a 4WD/High Clearance vehicle.

Collecting will be from the Open Pit near the top of the hill. It is a steep, but short climb from the parking area. Remember to bring a hand lens or magnifying loop because most of the minerals collected are very
small.
